This mausoleum was built in honor of the Seljuk ruler, Sultan Sanjar, who died in 1157, reportedly suffering a broken heart at seeing his capital Merv having been plundered by raiders. Sanjar is not buried at the mausoleum - his remains are elsewhere in an unknown location, in order to prevent looters.
