Church of St Mary of the Mongols
This church was built in the 13th century, to honor Princess Maria Paleologina, who was sent off to marry the Mongol Khan Hulagu, but ended up marrying his son Abagu, as Hulagu died while Maria was en route. Upon Abagus death, she returned to Constantinople (Istanbul) and retired to a convent. This was the only church to remain in Greek hands after the conquest of Istanbul by Mehmet the Conqueror, and was saved by his personal decree. The church is usually open on weekends.
