This mosque lies on a hill at the south end of the Afrasiyab ruins. It is one of the original edifces of Samarkand, having been constructed in the 8th century. It was burned to the ground by Genghis Khan in the 13th century, and lay in ruins until 1854. It underwent further restoration work in the 1990s, paid for by a wealthy Bukharan, and is now one of the most beautiful mosques in the city.
